This past weekend, Gov. Sisolak and state authorities provided updates and clarifications regarding statewide school closures amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the top of the list most impacting students and families in Carson City were four points: 1) all testing has been waived, 2) schools will not reopen prior to April 16, 3) all school employees are deemed to be “essential” and 4) the Nevada Department of Education has approved the request for Emergency Program of Distance Education from the Carson City School District.

  1. All testing used for accountability purposes, graduation requirements and federal reporting has been waived for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. This includes EOCs, ACTs, SBACs, and Career and College Ready assessments.
  2. Schools across the state of Nevada will not reopen prior to April 16, 2020. Students and employees within the Carson City School District will be on Spring Break from April 10-17, so if the state's medical officer deems it safe to do so, schools will reopen Monday, April 20. Again, this is only if it is deemed safe to return and congregate. Please note, during spring break, no educational or food services will be provided.
  3. All school employees are deemed to be "essential" and therefore may be called upon to assist with any support deemed necessary to sustain our students, even if that means working from home in some cases, working at off site locations and working outside of job descriptions.
  4. The Carson City School Board President Mike Walker and Superintendent Richard Stokes have received approval from the Nevada Department of Education to provide Remote Learning (Emergency Program of Distance Education). The program was developed per the governor’s Declaration of Emergency Directive and will follow the guidance from the State Superintendent Jhone Ebert. All students in the state are expected to receive remote instruction from their respective school districts effective today, Monday, March 23.

Additionally, the governor signed an emergency directive related to how public bodies in the state of Nevada must operate public meetings. The directive suspends the requirement that there must be a physical location designated for meetings of a public body where members of the public are permitted to attend and participate in-person.

Any public body that holds a meeting pursuant to this Executive Order must find an alternative way for the public to participate without having to be physically present. The directive also states that if a public body holds a meeting by teleconference or video conference, there must be a way for members of the public to provide public comment.

As such, the Carson City School District will have its March 24 School Board Meeting, tomorrow, as planned. The posted Agenda contains information for the public to attend the meeting remotely and participate electronically. If you have questions or would like to learn more how you can participate in the school board meeting remotely, please contact the Carson City School District’s office, 775-283-2000.
