A NOTE FROM OUR SUPERINTENDENT

Andrew FeulingThis winter has certainly been one to remember. I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to our incredible employees who have worked tirelessly to clear sidewalks and parking lots, ensuring our schools remain safe and accessible for everyone. I also want to recognize the efforts of our staff, students and families who have adapted to snowy conditions with flexibility and resilience. Your persistence has allowed us to continue to have school most days, ensuring learning continues despite the weather. And as much as I am grateful for relief from our drought, I look forward more to welcoming the new Spring season.

As we enter the final stretch of this exciting school year, we couldn’t be more proud of the accomplishments of our students. You’ll find many highlights as you continue to read below of both students and teachers doing remarkable things. We realize that the success of our students comes in part because of the tremendous support from parents and our community, but we should also recognize the dedicated employees who pour their heart and souls into our students every day. From teachers to bus drivers, secretaries, aides, custodians, food service staff, maintenance staff and administrators; we have a family approach here, and we take seriously our job of investing into the lives of every student, every day
.

Sincerely,
Andrew Feuling
Superintendent, Carson City School District

DIAL 988 FOR 24/7 MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS CARE

Mental Health CareWe would like to remind students and families that there is help at the touch of their fingertips. In July of last year, the U.S. transitioned the 10-digit National Suicide Prevention Lifeline to 988, an easy-to-remember three-digit number for 24/7 mental health crisis care.

The move to the three-digit 988 phone number makes it easier to dial when emotions are running high. It also alleviates suicide-related calls to 911, redirecting the caller to a mental health professional who’s able to better assist them and their immediate needs. Read more.

FAST-TRACKS TEACHING LICENSURE FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH BACHELORS

TeachersIn partnership with iteachNEVADA, a national licensing provider, the Carson City School District has created a “Grow Your Own” educator preparation program designed to help the school district hire more certified teachers amid continued teacher shortages. In short, the program will fast-track individuals who have a bachelor’s degree to obtain a teaching license outside traditional pathways.

The alternative route to licensure partnership will give Carson City School District full control of the teacher candidate recruitment process, while iteach will provide free test preparation and assume creation, maintenance and assessment of all coursework and educator platforms. The new program will also offer rigorous educator preparation without the semester-to-semester time restrictions and cost associated with a traditional brick-and-mortar university. STUDENTS, EDUCATORS OPEN FIRST DAY OF NEVADA LEGISLATIVE SESSION

Legislative SessionCarson City School District students and educators helped open the first day of Nevada’s 2023 State Legislative Session Monday, February 6, 2023. To begin, the Carson High School NJROTC honor guard presented the colors, prior to the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the National Anthem, sung by Mark Twain Elementary Music Educator Christina Bourne. The Carson High School Concert Choir then performed "Home Means Nevada" and "Bright Morning Stars," a traditional 19th century American Spiritual arranged by Alice Parker. Watch the full video.

Pledge of AllegianceAdditionally, a dozen 5- and 6-year-olds from Ms. Sewell’s kindergarten class from Seeliger Elementary School had an opportunity to show their pride, patriotism and love for their state and country by leading and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance prior to Nevada’s new Governor Joe Lombardo’s State of the State Address Jan. 23, 2023. These reverent displays of patriotism and unity set an optimistic tone and a sense of pride in the hearts of all those in attendance. The experiences also provided the students and teachers with a greater appreciation for the role of government in their community and the importance of being informed citizens. The school district plans to continue providing opportunities for students and educators to share their talents, participate in civic events and be engaged in the legislative process.

BoxingAlso, Carson Middle School sixth-grader Ivan Manzano and Carson High sophomores Miguel Elizondo and Jimmy Sapien punched their way to the top, winning both state and regional boxing championships. Ultimately, Miguel Elizondo won the National Championship bout at the Silver Gloves National Finals, hosted in Independence, Mo. in February.
