This week, the senior in the spotlight is Lance Hornemann. Lance is an excellent student, a dedicated athlete and a future engineer.

Although Lance enjoys his time at Carson High School, he quickly realized that starting college a little early would benefit him in the long run. As a junior, he joined the Jump Start program and on May 22, about two weeks before he graduates from high school, he will earn his associate degree of science from Western Nevada College. At WNC, he was able to take advantage of a really exciting opportunity.

Through a NASA grant, he participated in the Nevada NASA Space Consortium Community of Practice scholarship program. Along with three other students and four college professors, they studied how different types of insulation would protect electronics in a high-altitude balloon. They also worked with augmented reality to recalibrate a sandbox to show topography changes. Through this project, Lance learned how to be productive in a group and the importance of community relationships.

Lance has been an athlete since he was young, participating in a number of different activities. Through Carson High School, he has been a part of the boys' golf team for four years and a member of the boys' tennis team for two years. Outside of school, Lance has engaged in martial arts for 12 years including 4 years of mixed martial arts and 8 years of Jiu Jitsu. Lance also enjoys mountain biking and snowboarding.

Lance is set to start his bachelor's degree program at the University of Nevada, Reno in the fall, where he will major in mechanical engineering. When asked where that degree will lead, he has two possible careers he would like to pursue. The first is in robotics and automation, where he would help design the robots that work in assembly lines. The second is an automotive stylist, where he would have the exciting job of designing new vehicles. Carson High School is proud of you, Lance.
